Extended payment date 10/15???

When I extend a return it says on the letter that the payment date is 10/15!?

In my opinion it should never say you have until 10/15!?

Here are the rules.

Filing Extension: An extension to file grants you extra time to submit your tax return, usually until October 15th, without incurring failure-to-file penalties.

Payment Deadline Remains: The deadline for paying any taxes owed remains the original tax filing due date, typically April 15th.

Interest and Penalties: If you don't pay your taxes by the original due date, interest and penalties for late payment will be assessed, even if you have a filing extension.

The letter can be changed to reflect April 15, 2025, as the payment due date by going to General --> Letter --> Due Date of Return [Override] and enter "4/15/2025".  The client letter will update the sentence regarding mailing the payment to the agency to match whatever date you enter in that field.

Enter date filed if not due date in the software. Maybe in the penalty section?

Proconnect then just changes the payment date to the date that you entered. Your client then thinks they can pay late.

So you want it to say due April 15 for a return filed in June?

..... then thinks they can pay late.

They are 'already' late.  Perhaps just a conversation with your client that they have until 10.15 to FILE but that they should have paid back in April...

Or edit the letter to say, pay ASAP.

You appear to have come up with a very simple solution to what appears to be a very complex problem 😀

I know that I don't want it to say they have until June.

I have used just about every top of the line tax software and none of them ever say that you can pay late.

I don't know why I should have to go into the tax software and make special adjustments for something the tax software shouldn't be doing. Isn't that why I pay top dollar for it in the first place?

Take it up with Intuit.  We just sweep and mop around here and don't have any say as to how the software is designed.

Other software I have used will automatically change an extended return filed after the due date to " To minimize penalties make your payment as soon as possible."

I guess I will just have to get used to it not happening automatically.

I believe it is not automatic because of all of the various situations that can affect extensions like disaster extensions so we give the preparer the ability to override as they see fit knowing their client situation best.  But, you can always vote for it as a feature enhancement never know.  However, glad I was able to help.
